En novembre 1976, après seize ans de concerts sans interruption, les membres de l'orchestre The Band, groupe ayant anciennement accompagné Bob Dylan, décident de mettre fin à leur carrière. Ils se proposent de fêter leurs adieux par une dernière messe endiablée au Winterland, ancienne patinoire de San Francisco, là où ils avaient débuté. De nombreux musiciens viennent cette nuit-là se joindre à eux pour ce concert historique.
