Even though rather middle-aged, Gianni lives in an old apartment in the centre of Rome with his mother, a lady of aristocratic origin who tyrannizes him and barely leaves him time to have drinks in a bar. The day before the Feast of the Assumption (surnamed "Ferragosto" in Italian), the manager of the building, who is familiar with Gianni's "captivity", asks Giovanni to take care of his mother for two days in exchange for settling all of Gianni's debts.
