| Fils du producteur Salvatore Argento et de la photographe Elda Luxardo, il est critique de cinéma puis travaille comme scénariste. Il collabore ainsi à Il était une fois dans l'Ouest. Il réalise L'Oiseau au plumage de cristal (1970), Le Chat a neuf queues (1971) et Quatre mouches de velours gris (1972). Cette trilogie l'impose comme un maître du « giallo ». Après Les Frissons de l'angoisse (1975), il signe Suspiria (1977), son film le plus connu à l'étranger. Après plusieurs films dans les années quatre-vingt dont le terrifiant Opéra (1987), il part aux États-Unis tourner Trauma. Suivent Le Syndrome de Stendhal (1996) tourné en Italie et Le Fantôme de l'opéra (1999). Ses derniers films : Le Sang des innocents (2001), The Card Player (2004), Jenifer (2005), J'aurai leur peau ! He made The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970), The Cat O'Nine Tails (1971) and Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1972).This trio made him the master of 'giallo'. Deep Red (1975) was followed by Suspiria (1977), his best-known film abroad. After making several films in the 1990s, including the terrifying Opera (1987), he made Trauma in the United States. This was followed by The Stendhal Syndrome (1996) shot in Italy and The Phantom of the Opera (1999). His recent films are Sleepless (2001), The Card Player (2004), Jenifer (2005), Pelts! (2006), The Mother of Tears (2007) and Giallo (2009). |
