Né à Kazanli (Turquie) en 1968. Il vit en Allemagne depuis 1975. Il fonde le groupe de théâtre Summer-Winter en 1988. Il écrit et met en scène sa première pièce de théâtre la même année : Powerlessness of Everyday Life. Son premier film, Langer Gang (1992), obtient le prix du meilleur premier film à San Sebastián, ainsi que la Rose d’Argent au festival de Bergame en 1992, avant d’être nominé, l’année suivante, aux German Film Awards. Il réalise Yara en 1998, qui relate l’histoire d’une jeune fille Turque résidant en Allemagne, mais qui est soudain emmenée dans son pays d’origine et retenue de force. Ses longs métrages, inspirés de ses expériences personnelles, traitent des problèmes d’immigration et d’intégration. Marqués par la perte de l’identité culturelle, les personnages de ses films souffrent jusqu’à atteindre la folie comme dans Yara (1998) ou sombrer dans la violence comme dans Fratricide (2005). Born in Kazanli in Turkey in 1968, Yilmaz Arslan moved to West Germany in 1975. He founded the Sommer-Winter theatre company in 1988. His first film, Langer Gang (1992), won the Best First Film prize at the San Sebastián Festival, as well as the Silver Rose at the Bergamo Festival 1992, and the following year was nominated for the German Film Awards. In 1998 he made Yara, a story about a young Turkish girl living in Germany who is suddenly taken back to her native country and held there by force.His feature films, based on his own personal experiences, deal with the problems of immigration and integration. The characters in his films suffer from a loss of cultural identity: in Yara this results in madness, in Fratricide (2005) it leads to violence
