Irene Bignardi est née à Mantova en 1943. Elle étudie la littérature à l'Université de Milan, puis la Communication à la Stanford University. Traductrice, rédactrice pour Olivetti, rédactrice en chef de la section culture pour la Radio Televisione Italiana, elle devient critique de film pour l'Espresso puis correspondante pour la section Culture et critique de film de La Repubblica dès sa création. De 1986 à 1989, elle est directrice du Cattolica's Mystfest, et travaille par la suite au côté de Gillo Pontecorvo à la Mostra de Venise. Parmi ses écrits, le scénario de Bertini, l'ultima diva, de Gianfranco Mingozzi et les livres Le Déclin de l'Empire Américain et Little Utopia. En 1996, elle est faite Commendatore della Reppublica Italiana. De 2001 à 2005, elle est directrice du Festival International du film de Locarno. Irene Bignardi was born in 1943 in Mantova. She worked as a translator, a copywriter for Olivetti then as editor of the culture section at Radio Televisione Italiana. She became a film critic for l'Espresso, and, since its inception, has been both correspondent for the Culture section and film critic for La Repubblica. From 1986 to 1989 she was Director of Cattolica's MystFest, and subsequently worked with Gillo Pontecorvo at the Mostra di Venezia. Her writings include the script for Gianfranco Mingozzi's Bertini, l'ultima diva, and the books The Decline of the American Empire and Little Utopias. In 1996, she was made Commendatore della Repubblica Italiana. From 2001 to 2005, she was the director of the Festival Internazionale del Film di Locarno.
