| Né à Parme en 1941. Fils du poète et critique Attilio Bertolucci, il rencontre, à l'université de Rome, Pasolini dont il est assistant sur Accatone (1961) puis réalise La commare secca (1962), son premier long métrage. Avec Prima della rivoluzione (1964), il met l'accent sur les dilemmes de l'intellectuel italien à la fois conformiste et cultivé, révolutionnaire et conservateur. S'inspirant de Borges et Moravia, il signe La Stratégie de l'araignée (1970) et Le Conformiste (1971) qui montrent des êtres en quête d'identité personnelle et politique dans le contexte de la montée du fascisme. Après le sulfureux Dernier tango à Paris (1972) et 1900 (1976), il élargit sa palette avec La Luna (1979) et La Tragédie d'un homme ridicule (1981). Il réalise à l'étranger Le Dernier empereur et Un thé au Sahara puis revient en Italie avec Beauté volée (1996) et Shanduraï (1999). En 2003 sort The Dreamers, l'histoire de trois jeunes à Paris lors des événements de mai 68. | Born in Parma in 1941. The son of the poet and critic Attilio Bertolucci, he met Pasolini at Rome University and became his assistant on Accatone (1961) and then made La commare secca (1962), his first feature film. In Prima della rivoluzione (1964) he stressed the dilemmas of the Italian intellectuals who were both conformist and cultivated, revolutionary and conservative. Taking inspiration from Borges and Moravia, he made La strategia del ragno (The Spider's Stratagem (1970) and Il conformista (The Conformist (1971), depicting beings in search of personal and political identity in the context of the rise of fascism. After the scandalous Last Tango in Paris (1972) and 1900 (1976), he broadened his palette with La Luna (1979) and La tragedia di un uomo ridicolo (1981). Abroad, he made L'ultimo imperatore (The Last Emperor) and The Sheltering Sky and then returned to Italy with Stealing Beauty (Io ballo da sola (1996) and Besieged (1999). The Dreamers, the story of three young people in Paris in May 1968 was released in 2003. |
